M.S. or M.Ed. in Educational Administration

This program provides Texas public school educators greater access to professional development and principal/superintendent certification.

Purpose

Concerns have grown in Texas and the nation over the shortage of qualified school administrators available to fill vacancies at campus and district levels. Forward-looking districts are trying to alleviate this problem by recommending and fostering administrator training for talented individuals within their systems. These programs provide Texas public school educators greater access to professional development and principal/superintendent certification.

Delivery Format: Remote Sites

THIS IS NOT AN ONLINE PROGRAM. Selected courses in support of campus-based degree programs will be offered based on requests from school districts and other higher education institutions for a group of students at their location to meet market needs consistent with our ability to maintain high quality standards.

Degree Program and Course Requirements

Masters courses in Educational Administration offered at a distance have the same requirements as the on-campus program at College Station. Students are admitted to the program via regular campus-based procedures. Program coursework is offered for cohorts via a combination of campus-based and remote site offerings. In many instances coursework is delivered simultaneously to the remote site and to a campus-based group, utilizing various distance education technologies. Residency requirements for the degrees are the same regardless of whether some coursework is taken at a distance or all coursework is taken on campus. Most of the coursework is delivered by full-time faculty members holding Graduate Faculty status who are on the staff in College Station. In some limited instances qualified adjunct professors offer coursework or team-teach with a regular faculty member.

M.S. and M.Ed. Programs Compared

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree primarily serves public school practitioners, and the requirements are directly related to the state certification of middle level management for public school personnel. The Master of Science (M.S.) (non-thesis) prepares administrators to go into the higher education environment. While it does not include a thesis option at a distance, statistics and a survey research class are a part of this professional preparation.

Examinations

All examinations relating to the masters degree follow the same procedures regardless of whether or not some portions of the degree is taken at a distance. These standards are outlined in the Texas A&M Graduate Catalog. Students are required to come to campus for exams, with isolated exceptions that might take place via video-conferencing or at an alternative site location.
