M.S. in Mathematics
Program Description
This 36-semester hour graduate program is designed for individuals with interests in mathematics, with a particular desire to teach in K-12 and community colleges. Primarily it is intended for individuals with an undergraduate degree in mathematics, computer science, or engineering.
Requirements
The masters of Mathematics with a Teaching Option online degree program has the same requirements as for the synchronous degree. To complete the degree, you must be fully admitted into Texas A&M's graduate program. This degree:
- Requires a minimum of 36 credit hours.

- Must include 12 hours of regular mathematics courses, at least six of which must be standard graduate mathematics courses. The other six hours can be used to remove any deficiencies such as geometry (MATH 467) and Math & Technology (MATH 403). A list of acceptable graduate mathematics courses will be maintained by the Graduate Program Office.
- There must be 12 credit hours in specialized mathematics courses consisting of the following:
o MATH 645,646 (Survey of Mathematical Problems I&II)
o MATH 629 (History of Mathematics)
o MATH 696 (Mathematical Communication and Technology) - There must be 12 credit hours of supporting coursework selected from the following:
o Two graduate courses in education (the student has the option of an emphasis at either the elementary, secondary, or collegiate level)
o One graduate course in statistical methods (e.g., STAT 601)
o Additional coursework necessary to fill deficiencies and bring the total to 36 credit hours
The degree program is fully online. Although not all of the courses are in place just yet, courses will be offered regularly. The current schedule includes online courses from other departments that count toward the mathematics masters degree. Other courses are under design and include Math 609-610 Numerical Analysis, Math 423 Linear Algebra, and Math 663 Analysis.
To enroll
To enroll you must either apply to graduate school - or - complete a G6 application form. To begin taking courses, your applying as a G-6 student is quickest and easiest and allows you to determine whether or not the program meets your needs. In addition, the course you take will transfer to the graduate program here, should you apply and be accepted for admission to the MS-Mathematics program. Enrollment information may be found online, and the Office of Admissions and Records offers applications for download.
Distance education platforms
Almost all courses will be taught over the Internet. With some exceptions, courses will be offered using a network video. Courses are listed with the section 700 designation, e.g. MATH 629-700 indicates the distance version of Math 629.
Course Examinations
The courses will all require student evaluations or examinations during the semester. The evaluations may be in the form of take-home comprehensive examinations, research projects, or semester projects. The evaluation instructions will be submitted either by traditional mail, e-mail, downloadable web sites, or facsimile, at the discretion of the instructor. The uniformity and content of all examinations will be the same whether students are on or off campus. After completing all program requirements, all M.S. students will be required to complete a final examination.
